WiMax mobile roaming at 125mph

November 08, 2004

bullet-train.jpgProxicom, a global leader in developing WiFi and broadband networks, released an early November press release detailing their plans for WiMax, and introduced new enabling technology that sets the stage for remote wireless connectivity at high-speeds, and we don't just mean high bandwidth speeds!

New hardware, named Tsunami MP.11, merges with their existing software platform (Tsunami BWA) to enable customers to implement WiMAX applications such as public safety, security and surveillance, last mile access and metropolitan area networking now, while providing an upgrade path to full WiMAX Forum Certified status later.

From a practical standpoint, the improvement certainly address some of the hard-world applications, allowing and defining a WiMax standard, while allowing developers to begin fleshing out plan for networking products. But what about the end user?

Well, most interestingly, Proxicom's hardware release facilitates an industry-first mobile roaming capability, which allows networks to be placed on moving vehicles, where they can roam between multiple base stations. With an ensured 100% connectivity, the Tsunami BWA Software Platform’s mobile roaming enables fast hand-off at speeds of up to 200 km (125 miles) per hour, enabling mobile hot-spot or mobile security and surveillance applications in ferry systems, airport transit buses and high-speed railway systems.

So, bullet train... meet WiMax. WiMax, meet bullet train. Now, if we could only start getting to work on those bullet trains!

Nice to have some Spanish speakers commenting!

Well, we will keep an eye out for any news about Wireless Broadband developments in Chile, but right now we have not heard anything.

And as for finding some technical information about WiMAX... stay tuned. We are going to keep adding more content, including access to technical documents, a listing of events, a free industry-related job board, and more. Sobre Wimax.

Gracias.

I had heard that for the fixed 802.16a WiMAX technology, there will be no roaming feature so as to cover a larger area with better throughput.
But this new hardware claim to have mobile roaming up to 200km. I had a glance on this hardware intro. in the Proxim homepage, but still not quite sure whether this roaming feature is readily for WiMax and how it will affect the throughput and coverage.
Do you have any information or am I wrong that WiMax standard do not have roaming feature? Will there will roaming for WiMAX in the early roll-out stage?
Thanks a lot.
