Who are the WiMax players?
November 01, 2004
From the national biggies like Intel, maverick cell carriers like Nextel and down to some local players, companies are jockeying for standards rights, hardware ownership and distribution rights to the newly hyped up WiMAX technology. For many of these companies, it's not just about who gets to set the standards, but who will be the first to capitalize on the opportunity to defend or break into a competitors traditional consumer base.
So far, Intel has emerged as one of the key technology players, but there are over 165 different WiMAXForum member companies, from Wi-Fi developers to traditional ISPs who are buzzing with the oportunity for the technology to expand their offerings into new markets.

Can you please tell me about the real throuputs? Is this technology helpful for those who need real through puts? What is the maximim bandwidth it can operate... is it 108 mbps?

The data throughput of a WiMax network varies depending on distance and the width of the radio spectrum band it can use. With 20-MHz of spectrum, comparable to the amount available on Wi-Fi wireless LANs, a WiMax base station could deliver about 70 megabits per second.

I am a private investor that invest in early stage companies. I am interested in WIMAX but have very little real tech knowledge. I have been a share holder of Alverion ALVR for some time. I am interested in determining who will be the real players in this space. Can some one point me in the right direction or to a consultant?

There are many companies, for example, almost 200 members of the Wimax Forum who are all investing in WiMAX. We're also tracking a small San Diego community hoping to establish WiMAX in their rural community. Keep coming back for more news about the moves of the principal players, as well as those on a more local level.

Does anyone know what is happening at Deutsche Telekom with WiMax? Are they trialing? Do we know for which market they might use the equipment?
