Navini unveils mobile WiMAX equipment

June 29, 2005

Wireless broadband equipment vendor Navini Networks unveiled a line of pre-standard mobile WiMAX equipment.

The company said that it will start shipping a PCMCIA card in the first quarter of 2006 and customer premises equipment (CPE) by the end of this year. The equipment will have the Ripwave-MX brand, the company said in a statement. In addition, the company said it will offer base station equipment for wireless ISPs in the first half of 2006.

The mobile WiMAX standard, 802.11e, isn't expected to be ratified for at least a year. However, Navini claimed that its equipment will be easily upgradeable when the final standard is ratified. Certification testing for fixed WiMAX equipment starts in July, with officially certified equipment expected to start being available at the end of 2005 or early next year.

Navini said its Ripwave-MX equipment is dual-mode, meaning it will operate both on fixed WiMAX networks and on pre-standard mobile WiMAX networks.
