Intel makes another big push

October 27, 2004

Intel forges ahead again, this time making an investment in Clearwire, the broadband company of wireless tycoon Craig McCaw. According to both firms, Clearwire will deploy WiMax-based networks with Intel technology that supports the 802.16e standard with gear from NextNet (a subsidiary firm of Clearwire). The development is founded on work all three companies have done in the testing of new WiMax equipment this summer.

There are no particulars of the deal as of yet, but Intel it appears, has earmarked $150 million for high-speed wireless investment -- which signals a significant move for the emerging industry.

Intel is banking on big business for its wireless laptop chips. If the technology proves to be close to the success that some of these firms are promising, then everyone will want a "Rosedale" chip, or a low-heat generating chip based on the WiMAx 802.16e standard, in their computer, laptop, or palm computer to help efficiently power a long distance broadband WiMax connection.

I live in south of Spain at the coast. I read that local Iberbanda is providing WiMax service in Spain, but I couldn`t retrieve more information about the availabilities. Does anybody know something about the local possibilities?

Good question..! We'll keep our ears perked for any news regarding Iberbanda and local Spanish WiMAX developments.

We've just learned that Iberabanda is now spending several million dollars setting up BreezeMAX in a few rural and sub-rural areas (Andalusia and Catalonia) in Spain. BreezeMAX can be considered to be a "pre-WiMAX" structure.

These are just marketing hypes, one has to wait till 3rd quarter 2005 for experience real WiMAX ride. It is not just under certification phases.

The installed network is a plain 802.16 standard which is live since 2001.
