Intel wows with WiMAX demos

March 25, 2005

U.K. - Intel staged some impressive demonstrations by building an early WiMAX deployment for its reserve warehouses, which sit on an abandoned airfield near Intel's offices at U.K.'s National Museum of Science and Industry in Swindon, Wiltshire.

Central to Intel's demo was the location, which until last week, barely a blip on the radar. Now, the whole site has become Wi-Fi enabled. One Wi-Fi base station located in Intel's Swindon HQ feeds WiMAX access points located in seven hangars. Each hangar has around six Wi-Fi access points. These in turn feed Wi-Fi enabled laptops, and allow museum employees to roam between the hundreds of exhibits in storage, entering data on a Tablet PC.

The climax of the demo was a streaming video delivered from some 7-8 Kilometres (almost 5 miles) away to a theatre in Dolby's Swindon research establishment. It was full broadcast quality and displayed no 'glitches'.

Intel also displayed how the Science Museum's WiMAX feed could also be used to support VoIP telephony via Skype.

In the first link below, the full story caps off with a stolen pict of a WiMAX station motherboard with an Intel Rosedale Chip. Additional WiMAX gear was chiefly supplied by Alvarion.
